How can we notice the beginning of hydrolysis of the suture?

The beginning of synthetic suture hydrolysis is often noticed when a suture breaks when being knotted.
The suture breaks during a moderate traction, it is slightly decolourized and it is a lot more rigid.
At a more advanced stage, it may even turn into powder.
